(ORDO NEWS) — The floating city in the Maldives is an ambitious and timely project to build a floating city to counteract rising sea levels. After more than ten years of planning, the city is finally starting to take shape.
Ten minutes by boat from the capital of the Maldives, a new Venice is being built. The city will consist of 5,000 floating units, including houses, restaurants, shops and schools, with canals between them.
About 20,000 people will be able to live in the city. The project is a joint venture between developer Dutch Docklands and the government of the Maldives.
Dutch Docklands has already designed over 300 floating structures around the world, which are now used as homes, offices, schools and even medical centers.
The construction of the floating city began in 2022, and the first facilities will be commissioned at the end of June.
Residents will be able to move in as early as 2024, and all construction is planned to be completed by 2027. Homes are expected to cost between $150,000 and $250,000.
