Yellowstone seismic activity increases every month
(ORDO NEWS) — Recently, a volcanic observatory monitoring Yellowstone presented a new report on the activity of the volcano in May 2020. As it turned out, the earthquakes not only continued, but also became more frequent.
The United States Geological Survey still does not change the code for aviation (it remains green), the danger indicator of a supervolcano is normal. This is due to the fact that the number of seismic events has increased, and the number of awakenings of the Steamboat geyser has also increased.
In May there was a three-fold increase in shocks compared to previous months. You can imagine what the situation is on the territory now. In May, a geyser woke up 5 times: on the 8th, 14th, 19th, 23rd and 31st. In total, over the year, specialists counted 17 steam emissions.
Last month, 288 earthquakes were recorded in the park using the University of Utah seismographic stations. The strongest phenomenon was 3.1 points. It happened on May 29 early in the morning. The epicenter was identified five miles from Norris Junction heading west. In the same region, several series of tremors occurred: 12 cases of May 4, 39 earthquakes on May 22 and 100 tremors on May 29. Strength in all cases only slightly exceeded 3 points.
Sensors also recorded seismic activity, consisting of 80 aftershocks, on May 9th. It happened ten miles northeast of West Yellowstone.
Regarding the volcanic caldera: it actively sags for five consecutive years by several centimeters a year. GPS devices recently noticed some deformation earlier this year.
