(ORDO NEWS) — A 53-year-old European man was completely cured of HIV infection by stem cell transplantation.
The operation itself was carried out 10 years ago. And four years ago, he stopped giving any drugs for the disease.
An international team of researchers conducted this experimental treatment as part of the European IciStem program.
Stem cell transplantation is used here to stop such a consequence of HIV as leukemia.
The project does not use any donor cells, but those with a genetic mutation. In such cells, there is no possibility for the development of the human immunodeficiency virus.
The lucky one is conditionally called the “Düsseldorf patient” according to the location of his treatment.
He became the third European with HIV who is officially considered recovered after a stem cell transplant. The other two were under observation in Berlin and London.
The technique is extreme, scientists admit. And it is used only in cases of a clear threat to the life of patients. In parallel, experts are looking for more gentle methods of treatment.
