NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — A treasure hunter from Norway made a small but incredibly important discovery last year. He discovered a small piece of metal.
At first glance, it seemed that this find was of no value. This metal fragment was discovered on a farm located on the west coast of Norway.
Only recently was it possible to find out how valuable the wreck is. Another treasure hunter found a more valuable find – a rather massive sword decorated with jewels.
Then the specialists managed to establish that in fact two finds are connected and with their help one artifact can be collected. Archaeologist Ann Zanette Glorstad of the University of Oslo in Norway said that this sword was put together like a puzzle. It is considered the most powerful sword that belongs to the Viking Age.
To date, experts have only been able to completely restore the hilt, but this can demonstrate how much work was done when this ancient sword was created.
“It is still impossible to see all the details of the sword. Despite this, it can be said that the decor of the handle consists of various elements of the beast style, characteristic of the late Iron Age.
In addition, various geometric shapes are present, for which silver and special niello jewelry techniques were used,” the researchers say.
According to preliminary data, the age of the sword reaches 1200 years. He can combine almost 20 similar artifacts that were found on the territory of Norway.
At the same time, some of the findings were imported. It is interesting that the sword got to the homeland of the Vikings from another place – from England or the Frankish state. Previously, the same swords were found all over Europe.
For example, an artifact was recently discovered in a 9th-century tomb on the Scottish island of Egg.
So far, researchers cannot say what exactly the origin of the sword is, although there are several assumptions. Most likely, the artifact belonged to a person with a high social status.
