(ORDO NEWS) — On the islands of Vanuatu, an active underwater volcano erupted, throwing plumes of ash into the sky.
Vanuatu Senior Volcanologist Ricardo William said the volcano is located 6 km east of Epi Island, which is located north of Vanuatu’s main island, Efate.
The undersea volcano East Epi has been shuddering and spewing steam since early Wednesday morning.
William said the eruption was enough to trigger several warnings.
“Volcanic activity increased slightly to explosions that raised about 100 km of ash that had fallen around the underwater volcano.
“We have advised aviation as well as yacht owners to stay away from the eastern part of Epi Island,” he said.
An alert has been issued for the other islands surrounding Epi.
The submarine volcano is one of a series of active underwater volcanic cones and calderas that last erupted in 2004.
This series of underwater volcanoes is commonly referred to as East Epi, and the three large cones have specific names, from west to east: Epi-A, Epi-B, and Epi-C.
All of these volcanoes have been periodically active in this and the last century.
