(ORDO NEWS) — A 55-year-old skier died in an avalanche in Wars (Hautes Alps), the third fatality in a week in the Alps due to very unstable snow conditions.
A 50-year-old man was caught in an avalanche in the afternoon while off-piste, under Chabrière Peak, a location accessible from the station’s lifts. He was found dead by paramedics.
This is the third avalanche death in a week in the Alps, across all sectors combined, Hautes-Alpes said.
Two other deadly avalanches hit Enchastrayes (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) on Monday and Pic Blanc du Galibier (Savoie) on Wednesday.
“We urge skiers to be very careful, the snow cover is currently prone to avalanches,” rescue services warn.
