(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of Oxford proposed using silk to repair neurons.
During the experiment, the authors made nerve channels from two different types of silk: silkworm silk was used for the tubes, and inside they consisted of spider silk.
The functioning of these channels has been tested in an animal model.
All tests were successful, and the damaged nerves took root in the new silk channels and grew along the implants until the torn nerve endings were restored.
Tubes made from silkworm silk have a porous wall for normal nutrient exchange and waste removal.
The molecular structure of the tubes was also taken into account, which ensures their strength: preventing bending and rupture.
