(ORDO NEWS) — Despite centuries of research and progress in medicine, there are still many unsolved mysteries, including what causes aging and how we can slow it down.
A study by scientists from the University of Cologne shed some light on these questions. This is reported by Euronews.
Researchers have found that gene transcription (the process by which a cell makes an RNA copy of a DNA strand) becomes faster with age, but less accurate and more error-prone (leading to many diseases), and that certain processes can help us slow down aging.
“This is the first eureka moment in my life. Such discoveries are not made every day. There’s a storm on Twitter. Some colleagues are very excited,” said Dr. Andreas Beyer.
Previous research in the field, he said, has asked questions like, “As you age, which genes are turned on and which are turned off?” and “How does it change regulation or metabolism in the cell?” But no one has asked how the transcription process changes with age in order to learn how to slow or even stop aging.
26 scientists from six different laboratories worked on the research. Experiments were carried out on worms, mice and fruit flies, and then the results were compared with the study of human blood of young and elderly people.
