(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have solved the mystery of the origin of the mysterious circles found in Namibia. These are circles of dry earth around which grass grows.
Scientists installed moisture sensors around the circles and observed for two years how the circles reacted to moisture.
As it turned out, immediately after the rain, these circles were overgrown with grass for 10-20 days, then the vegetation died again due to drought. Outside the circle, the grass remained alive.
At the same time, the sensors showed that moisture inside the circles evaporates much faster than outside, so the grass does not have time to take root and dies.
Survival of vegetation in a circle is not allowed by the grass outside it, sucking out moisture with its root system.
The researchers said it is a unique natural phenomenon where the grass uses the circles as a reservoir for moisture.
