(ORDO NEWS) — The Juno spacecraft took another picture of Jupiter. Thanks to him, scientists received more information about the turbulent weather of the gas giant. This is reported by Space.com.
It is noted that the device received the image on December 31, 2020, being at a distance of 32 thousand kilometers from the peak of the gas giant’s clouds. But they published it only now. The image shows a green flash of lightning piercing a hurricane near Jupiter’s north pole.
Astronomer Kevin Gill processed the image, using data obtained by Juno instruments.
This is not the only time the device has observed lightning on Jupiter. In fact, he encountered such events quite often. And these observations allowed scientists to determine that lightning on the gas giant is very similar to those observed on Earth. But there are also some differences.
“On Earth, lightning originates from water clouds and most often occurs near the equator, while on Jupiter, lightning probably also originates from clouds containing ammonia solution and is most often seen near the poles,” NASA said.
At the moment, “Juno” has made 51 approaches to Jupiter, the next one is expected on June 23.
