(ORDO NEWS) — More than a hundred years ago, some 240 athletes from 14 different countries participated in the first modern games, and today more than 10,000 athletes from over 180 countries take part in this prestigious sporting event.
As the games grew in scope and size, so did the cost of hosting them.
Over the years, the final numbers have varied greatly from city to city. Above is the estimated cost of hosting the Games (summer and winter) since 1998.
As you can see, games in Sochi in 2014 were the most expensive, their cost amounted to almost 60 billion US dollars. It is interesting that the domestic media give other figures: from 3.5 to 48 billion US dollars.
