(ORDO NEWS) — Outgoing sunspot AR3098 triggered five M-class solar flares as it moved around the edge of the Sun this weekend. One of them (M8 from September 16) was almost an X-flare.
Since AR3098 was not facing the Earth, all of the flares were muted in their effect, and none produced a CME directed towards the Earth.
Add them to the list of dozens of misses since August, all caused by the disappearance of sunspots.
The sun is beating down like an imperial stormtrooper. However, don’t get used to it. As the 25th solar cycle unfolds, an accidental hit is inevitable.
