(ORDO NEWS) — Engineers from the University of Maryland (USA) have created a portable laser that can detect organic compounds on the planets and satellites of the solar system. It weighs only about eight kilograms.
The new device is a smaller version of the device used in pharmaceutical laboratories for drug testing.
A pulsed ultraviolet laser will be able to detect large organic compounds on Mars or on Jupiter’s moon Europa by analyzing the chemical composition of planetary substances.
Scientists believe that in a few years the laser can be placed on a space probe and sent into space to search for organic compounds.
