(ORDO NEWS) — The tower has been standing since 1889 and is still growing. Once it was the tallest building on the planet, but then the Americans took the palm. Then why did the French add another 6 meters?
For more than 40 years, the tower held the championship of height among all buildings on Earth
On the morning of March 15, 2022, the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris gained in size. The helicopter lowered a large 6-meter antenna into the hands of workers on top of the building. After its installation, the height of the famous structure increased from 324 to 330 meters.
The purpose of this new antenna was not to raise the Eiffel Tower in the height rating. Instead, according to a statement posted on the attraction’s website, the goal of the project is “to improve the quality of digital radio coverage for Paris and the Île-de-France region.”
The antenna, owned by transmission company TDF, will facilitate the transmission of radio signals for DAB+, a high-tech and high-performance form of digital audio broadcasting that has gained popularity in recent years.
What is taller than the Eiffel Tower
She is still far from the tallest building in the world. The title, according to Travel + Leisure, belongs to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai with a height of 828 meters.
In fact, the Eiffel Tower isn’t even the tallest structure in France: the Millau Viaduct, which is also the world’s tallest bridge, stands 341 meters high on one of its pillars.
From 1889 to 1930, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building on Earth, until a new record was set by the Chrysler Building in New York.
The tower was built according to the sketches of several engineers: Maurice Keshlen, Emile Nougier and Gustave Eiffel. But all the laurels went to the latter.
