US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Doctors warned that coronavirus can trigger the development of acute diabetes mellitus even in a completely healthy person. In this case, the disease will persist even after the complete elimination of the virus.
In England and some other countries, a study was conducted some time ago that showed that adults with diabetes are more likely to die as a result of coronavirus infection. At the same time, letters were received by the New England Medical Journal from several scientists stating that coronavirus not only increases the risk, but can also lead to the development of diabetes itself.
For a long time, scientists believe that all sorts of viral infections can cause symptoms of diabetes. Cases were recorded when the disease began to develop on the background of mumps or enterovirus infections. There is also evidence that Coxsackie-B1 enterovirus can cause classic autoimmune type 1 diabetes.
Even before the coronavirus pandemic, an outbreak of SARS occurred in East Asia. Some patients have reported cases of acute diabetes. In most cases, the disease disappeared after a couple of years, but in about 10% of patients the problem was not solved. Experts have suggested that coronaviruses have approximately the same method of penetration into healthy body cells. After they enter the cells, they disrupt their normal functioning, which leads to impaired stabilization of blood sugar with insulin.
At the moment, there is no definite answer to the question of whether coronavirus can cause diabetes mellitus, but scientists are sure that they continue to conduct research on this topic.
