NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Chinese engineers surprised the world by moving a bus terminal weighing 30,000 tons by 288 meters.
Houshi Intercity Bus Terminal is located in Jimei District, Xiamen City, Fujian Province. Four years ago, local authorities decided to move the terminal to make way for a new city road. However, it was not so easy, since the building has enormous weight.
Engineers took on the challenge and decided to rotate the terminal 90 degrees, using one of its narrow sides as a central point. But how do you move a structure weighing 30,000 tons over 288 meters? The answer lay in an innovative system using special guides and 532 powerful hydraulic jacks.
Local newspaper Haixi Morning Post reported that the hydraulic jacks are divided into two groups controlled by computers. One group lifted the building and moved forward, then another group repeated this action, making it appear as if the entire terminal was sliding smoothly along the ground.
The amazing fact is that the hydraulic jacks worked non-stop, moving the terminal approximately 20 meters per day. It took 40 days to create a magnificent maneuver and set a new world record, included in the Guinness Book.
The construction of the Husi bus terminal cost approximately $39 million. However, the operation to transport it cost $7.5 million, which is certainly a good investment in the future of the city and the country.
