(ORDO NEWS) — Biologists from Curtin University in Australia have found that even short bursts of fireworks have a long-term negative impact on wildlife.
The authors of the paper analyzed the environmental impacts of Diwali celebrations in India, Independence Day celebrations in the United States, and other events in parts of Europe.
“Typically, the holidays on which it is customary to set off fireworks coincide with migratory or reproductive periods in wild animals.
Consequently, explosions adversely affect the population, and in the long term. Fireworks also pollute soil, water and air, with implications for both human and animal health,” the scientists noted.
As it turns out, fireworks at Spanish festivals affect the breeding success of house sparrows, in California they led to a reduction in the colonies of Antarctic blue-eyed cormorants, and in Chile they led to the strange behavior of southern sea lions during the breeding season.
“Fireworks should be replaced with cleaner shows using drones and laser light to avoid a highly destructive impact on wildlife, pets and the environment in general,” the researchers concluded.
