Biden’s 2023 defense budget will add five billion to the US Space Force

(ORDO NEWS) — President Biden’s $773 billion budget proposal for the Department of Defense for fiscal year 2023 includes $24.5 billion for the US Space Force and the Space Development Agency about $5 billion more than what Congress passed in 2022.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said anti-satellite weapons from adversaries such as China and Russia require the Department of Defense to invest in advanced space systems.

Where will the money go?

Early warning satellites using infrared sensors to detect and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles have received significant funding:

  • Funding for next generation geosynchronous and polar satellites with missile launch tracking capability (Next Gen OPIR) increased from $2.4 billion in 2022 to $3.4 billion in 2023.
  • The dispatch of the new GPS satellites will be funded by a budget of $761 million.
  • The secret satellite communications program known as Evolved Strategic Satcom will receive $566 million, up $406 million from 2022.
