Beijing says no evidence of COVID-19 in lab

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — There is no evidence that the new coronavirus was created in the laboratory, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Monday, commenting on the words of a French virologist who stated that COVID-19 is not of natural origin.

Earlier, the French virologist Luc Montagnier, who received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of HIV in 2008, stated that the new coronavirus COVID-19 is not naturally occurring and was developed in the laboratory.

The scientist suggested that this is the work of molecular biologists who may have wanted to produce an AIDS vaccine.

“We have repeatedly stated that this is a scientific question, it should be studied by doctors and scientists and should not be politicized. At the moment, WHO and the vast majority of experts believe that there is no evidence that the new coronavirus was created in the laboratory,” Geng Shuang said at a briefing.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan at the end of December last year, various versions have repeatedly appeared in the media and on the network that the new virus could “leak” from the laboratory of the local virology institute.

The institute itself in January issued an open letter in which it called the assumptions false rumors, and emphasized that the conscience of the institute’s employees was “absolutely clear”.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province).

Specialists found that the causative agent of the disease was a new coronavirus, later the disease was officially named COVID-19. WHO on March 11 announced the pandemic of a new coronavirus in the world.
