(ORDO NEWS) — An unusual cosmic phenomenon that occurs once a decade can be observed on May 21 at approximately 11:00 p.m. Kyiv time. At this moment, the Moon will be illuminated by the reflected light of the Earth. This is reported by The Guardian.
On Sunday, May 21, the Sun will illuminate only 5% of the Moon. However, the rest of the satellite will glow faintly due to a phenomenon known as the Da Vinci Glow.
This phenomenon was first explained by the famous scientist Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century, hence its name. The phenomenon is also called ashen glow, or “the old moon in the arms of the new”.
“A few years ago, it was believed that this aurora is the brightest in the north, but further research did not confirm this conclusion. However, scientists use the study of the Earth’s aurora brightness, which depends on the planet’s cloud cover, to search for changes in our atmosphere,” the publication writes.
This amazing phenomenon occurs when rays of sunlight bounce off Earth, shining through the dark side of our satellite, which is usually hidden from view. This phenomenon is best seen when the crescent Moon appears on the horizon after sunset or at dawn.
The dimly lit side of the moon will be visible for about five days before and after the new moon. This does not require special equipment, it is visible to the naked eye. However, from the sixth day of the phenomenon, a telescope may be needed to continue observing.
