NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — The specter of artificial intelligence (AI) going awry and posing a catastrophic threat to humanity looms large in the eyes of Dario Amodei, CEO of tech firm Anthropic.
He has voiced concerns that there might be a substantial probability, estimated at around 25%, of AI inadvertently leading to apocalyptic scenarios.
In his perspective, there’s a lurking danger that AI technology could be misused, causing it to veer towards conflict rather than merely aiding us in selecting music or managing our shopping lists.
During a podcast interview on The Logan Bartlett podcast, Amodei shared his apprehensions, stating, “I think I have often said my chance that something goes really quite catastrophically wrong on the scale of human civilization might be 10 to 25%. When you put that together with something going wrong with the model itself, with something going wrong with people or organizations or nation states misusing the model or inducing conflict or some way that society can’t handle it, what that means is there is a 75 to 90% chance that this technology is developed and everything goes fine.”
Amodei, who is slated to attend Rishi Sunak’s AI summit at Bletchley Park in the coming month, also believes that AI has the potential to make significant contributions in the realm of healthcare, including the eventual cure of cancer.
However, these concerns aren’t confined to Amodei alone. Andrea Miotti, a vocal advocate for AI safety, raises an important point of contention. He fears that the very companies that recognize a 10-25% chance of their AI products causing catastrophic harm might have undue influence in shaping the regulations governing AI safety.
Miotti’s Control AI campaign expresses the need for effective regulation, stressing that if the CEOs of these tech giants dictate the terms, it could leave the broader populace in a less secure position, intensifying the concerns over the unchecked power and development of AI technologies.
The complex interplay between AI innovation, regulation, and safety remains a critical challenge that the tech industry and society as a whole must grapple with in the coming years.
