(ORDO NEWS) — Due to environmental changes, the threat of lightning during the current monsoon season has increased in Madhya Pradesh, where 89 people have died due to lightning strikes in the first six months of this year.
This number of victims of lightning strikes in the state prior to June this year is higher than it was for the entire year in 2019.
“This rainy season, the threat of lightning strikes has increased from last year due to environmental changes,” said Ved Prakash Singh Chandel, senior researcher at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Lightning strikes have killed 89 people in the past six months from January to June, up from 82 in all of 2019, the official said.
