(ORDO NEWS) — The Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS) array on the newly launched NOAA-21 satellite began collecting Earth data on February 9, 2023.
He began work three months after the launch of the satellite from the Vandenberg Space Force Base.
VIIRS will collect thermal radiation data. Thermal imaging data has several important applications: it can measure sea and land surface temperatures, forest fire intensity, and detect clouds.
In this image, taken on February 9 and 10, cold objects such as clouds, snow and ice are shown in blue, while warm surfaces such as deserts are shown in shades of red.
The VIIRS on NOAA-21 also began collecting day-night (DNB) data. DNB is a unique feature of VIIRS that measures weak reflected light signals and is used to detect nighttime clouds and fog.
Lighting from artificial sources such as city lights, natural gas well flares, and shipping vessels can also be seen through the DNB.
