(ORDO NEWS) — Over the past 85 years, Switzerland has lost more than half of its total glacier volume.
Such data are provided by the Federal Polytechnic University and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research.
As it turned out, from the early 1930s to 2016, the volume of ice in the Alps was halved, and to this day their volume has decreased by another 12%.
This suggests that in recent years, due to climate change, the melting process has accelerated.
Scientists recalled that in terms of area, Swiss glaciers account for almost half of all glaciers in the European Alps.
The results of the study give a disappointing outlook for energy sources in Switzerland, as hydropower generates about 60% of the electricity in the country.
