(ORDO NEWS) — The fight against smoking in society only increases from year to year. Nicotine is a known evil. But for now, there are still enough smokers. Therefore, researchers are studying what exactly influences their appearance.
Drug scientists at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), USA, found that teens are 59% more likely to become heavy smokers if they start using menthol-flavored cigarettes instead of regular, unflavored cigarettes.
The researchers analyzed surveys of PATH, a project to study the effects of chronic smoking of nicotine-containing substances, which included 1096 adolescents 12 years of age and older. It studied how long children smoke, when and why they started, and which brands they prefer.

Narcologists determined that about 40% of respondents aged 12 to 14 often smoked menthol cigarettes or at least tried them.
For those whose first cigarette was menthol, scientists say, an increased level of nicotine addiction is typical compared to other smokers. In addition, giving up this type of cigarette increased the likelihood that a teenager would stop smoking daily by 47%.
“Menthol cigarettes are a truly unique product. They have an almost anesthetic quality that makes them easier to smoke,” said Andrea Villanti, an assistant professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey who studies youth tobacco use.
