NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Lidia strengthens into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane as it reaches Mexico.
The wind speed in Hurricane Lidia reached 220 kilometers per hour, which corresponds to category four out of five on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and nine-meter waves are expected on the coast of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, Mexican meteorologists reported.
“(Hurricane – ed.) Lydia has reached the dangerous strength of a fourth category hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale… The maximum sustained wind speed is 220 kilometers per hour, gusts are 260 kilometers per hour… Its circulation will cause extreme precipitation. .. and waves of seven to nine meters high on the coasts of Nayarit and Jalisco,” says a bulletin published by the National Meteorological Service on the social network X.
The day before, the state governments of Jalisco, Nayarit, Baja California Sur and Guerrero canceled all classes in educational institutions until notice as a preventive measure.
The National Civil Protection Service declared a red alert on Tuesday for 22 coastal municipalities in Jalisco state and seven municipalities in Nayarit state. In this situation, the public is advised to remain in shelters or safe places until the authorities are notified.
In addition to hurricane winds, the population of the region is threatened by heavy downpours – it is expected that up to 250 millimeters of precipitation will fall on the Lidia route in Jalisco and Nayarit, and up to 200 millimeters in Colima , Guerrero and Michoacan.
The last time a hurricane of this magnitude, Ian, made landfall from the Atlantic in 2022, it caused severe damage to western Cuba and the southeastern United States.
