(ORDO NEWS) — Reusable bottles are an eco-friendly solution to the problem of plastic pollution on the Earth. However, as research has shown, such a bottle will pollute… your body with a whole army of bacteria.
I don’t want to drink anymore…
Studies have shown that reusable bottles can contain 40,000 times more bacteria than a toilet seat! For this reason, some experts have called them “portable petri dishes”.
To prevent bacteria from building up, experts recommend washing the bottle daily with “hot soapy water.”
What did the study show?
A team of water treatment experts and a member of the US Water Quality Association have conducted one of the darkest studies on bacteria in water bottles.
They found the presence of two types of bacteria: gram-negative rods and bacilli.
Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli and Klebsiella, can cause a number of serious infections such as pneumonia.
While some types of bacilli can also lead to gastrointestinal problems, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The study looked at how colony forming units (CFUs) are found inside four popular types of water bottles. On average, the bottles contained 20.8 million CFU of Gram-negative bacteria.
The bottle with the spout and screw cap appeared to contain the most, at 30 million CFU. By comparison, a toilet seat has only 515, while a computer mouse has 5 million.
Curiously, even pet bowls contain less bacteria, containing only 1.48 million CFU.
