(ORDO NEWS) — The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said that in South Korea, experts have recorded the first case of infection with an amoeba species of Naegleria Fowler living in water bodies.
This amoeba penetrates the human brain and can lead to death.
“The KDCA has confirmed for the first time that Naegleria Fowler was infected in a man who died with meningitis and recently returned from abroad,” the agency said.
It is specified that the deceased patient was in Thailand for four months, and in December he returned to South Korea.
After some time, he began to experience discomfort from various symptoms, in particular headaches, fever and vomiting, and eventually died on December 21.
Experts after additional tests confirmed that he was infected with the amoeba Naegleria Fowler.
