NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — In a legal tangle involving unpaid rent, X Corp, previously known as Twitter, has taken legal action against Atlas Exploration, a financial services company, in a bid to recover over $713,500. The dispute stems from a sublease agreement for office space in San Francisco.
The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accuses Atlas Exploration, formerly known as Point Up Inc., of breaching the terms of the contract. Atlas, known for marketing itself as an “invite-only charge card” offering exclusive dining and travel privileges, had entered into a sublease agreement with X Corp for space located at 650 California Street in San Francisco’s financial district back in April 2021.
According to the complaint, Atlas initiated steps to terminate the sublease prematurely. X Corp contends that Atlas is in arrears for rent totaling more than $340,263 for the months spanning September to November of the previous year. Furthermore, X Corp alleges that Atlas has not made any payment toward the early termination fee.
The attorney representing Atlas in the dispute, Kevin Hill, has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, Hill did communicate in a letter to X Corp in April that the demand for rent for certain months in the previous year was unjustified, as Atlas had already made payments for its new office space.
This legal battle adds to a series of litigations that X Corp has been entangled in, primarily concerning unpaid rent and outstanding invoices, following Elon Musk‘s $44 billion acquisition of the company in October of the previous year.
One such case involves the owner of X Corp’s primary office at 1355 Market Street in San Francisco, which filed a lawsuit against the company for over $3.1 million in unpaid rent. X Corp is disputing these claims in court.
In January, Britain’s Crown Estate, responsible for managing the monarchy’s property portfolio, also filed claims against X Corp, asserting unpaid rent for its London headquarters.
In addition to rent-related disputes, X Corp is grappling with numerous employee lawsuits that challenge terminations, unpaid severance, and other employment benefits.
Jonathan Hawk, an attorney representing X Corp, has not yet responded to requests for comments. Likewise, a representative from X Corp has not issued an immediate statement regarding the matter.
The lawsuit is officially registered as X Corp v Atlas Exploration Inc in San Francisco Superior Court, under docket number CGC-23-609391.
