(ORDO News) — Chinese hackers, responsible for breaching Microsoft’s email platform earlier this year, have reportedly stolen tens of thousands of emails from U.S. State Department accounts, according to a Senate staffer who attended a briefing by State Department IT officials.
The officials informed lawmakers that approximately 60,000 emails were taken from 10 different State Department accounts.
Although the specific individuals affected were not identified, the majority of the targeted accounts were reportedly associated with work related to East Asia and the Pacific.
The breach highlights ongoing concerns about cybersecurity and foreign hacking threats against U.S. government entities.
The U.S. State Department has not provided an official comment on the matter as of now.
The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive government data from cyberattacks and espionage.
