(ORDO NEWS) — Last Sunday (April 24), a Chinese rocket was lifted into the upper atmosphere for the first time in a large helium balloon from Lenghu in northwest China‘s Qinghai province, according to the South China Morning Post. On command from the Earth, the rocket, after gaining a predetermined height, was launched from the ball.
The design of the rocket and balloon was created by Xingjian Tianhang Space Technology in collaboration with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Such technology can be widely used to study near space at altitudes of 20 to 100 kilometers, where planes no longer ascend and satellites do not descend.
Designed for air launch, the balloon was made of thin plastic and filled with helium at low pressure. As atmospheric pressure rose and fell, the shell of the balloon inflated and retained its shape and integrity. This allowed the ball to rise to a predetermined height and stay there long enough to launch the rocket.
