NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has died in prison.
Alexei Navalny died in correctional colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the regional department of the Federal Penitentiary Service reported.
“On February 16th of this year, in correctional colony No. 3, convict A.A. Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical workers from the institution immediately arrived and an emergency medical team was called,” the release said.
It is clarified that they tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Navalny. Soon doctors declared him dead. The reasons for the incident are being established.
According to an RT source, Navalny suffered a blood clot. The FSIN sent a commission to IK-3 from among the managers and employees of the operational and medical units of the department’s central apparatus.
Navalny ended up in prison after his suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher embezzlement case was replaced in February 2021 with real imprisonment due to violations of the suspended sentence regime.
In March last year, the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow sentenced him, together with the previous case, to nine years in a maximum security colony for fraud and contempt of court. The second episode of the case concerned the insult of judge Vera Akimova, who passed a sentence for slandering the Great Patriotic War veteran Ignat Artemenko – as a result of the trial, Navalny was fined 850 thousand rubles.
In May 2022, the Moscow City Court recognized the district court’s decision as legal, and in June Navalny was transferred from Correctional Colony No. 2 in the Vladimir Region to maximum security penal colony No. 6, located in the same region. Last year he ended up in penal colony No. 3 in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
