At a glance: A galaxy a billion light-years from Earth in the lens of the James Webb telescope
(ORDO NEWS) — Astronomers have presented an image of a spiral galaxy, which is located at a distance of a billion light years from Earth. The image was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
The new image shows a variety of galaxies in a variety of shapes, from ordinary spirals to ellipticals and irregular galaxies.
At the bottom of the image is the spiral galaxy LEDA 2046648, located just over a billion light-years from Earth towards the constellation Hercules.
The image was taken as part of work to calibrate the NIRISS spectrograph, which is used to obtain images in the near infrared range, and is also used to study galaxies and search for exoplanets.
