(ORDO NEWS) — The inscription discovered by archaeologists is the first convincing evidence that Odin was worshiped as early as the 5th century – 150 years earlier than previously thought.
Scandinavian scientists have identified the oldest known inscription referring to the Norse god Odin on part of a gold disk discovered in western Denmark in 2020.
The golden decoration contains the inscription “He is the man of Odin”, which is visible in a semicircle above the head of the depicted figure (photo above).
The inscription provides the first evidence that Odin was worshiped as early as the 5th century – at least 150 years earlier than the previous oldest known reference, which was found on a brooch found in southern Germany and dated to the second half of the 6th century.
The disk, discovered in Denmark, was part of a hoard containing about a kilogram of gold, including large saucer-sized medallions and Roman coins used to make jewelry.
The disc was discovered in the village of Vindelev, central Jutland, and was named the “Vindelev Treasure”.
