(ORDO NEWS) — How are black holes discovered?
Black holes are discovered when surrounding material (such as gas) is forced by gravity into a disk around the black hole.
The gas molecules in the disk revolve around the black hole so fast that they heat up and emit X-rays. These X-rays can be detected from Earth. Black holes can also be detected by observing the movement of stars around a black hole.
Can the Sun become a black hole?
No, the Sun is too small to ever become a black hole. To turn into a black hole, a star must be much more massive than the Sun.
Is there a black hole at the center of our Galaxy?
Yes, there is a very large black hole at the center of our galaxy. It has a mass of about three million suns and is very far from Earth at a distance of about 24,000 light years.
Huge black holes are thought to naturally occur at the center of most large galaxies, and many have already been discovered. The black hole at the center of our Galaxy is too far away to pose any danger to Earth.
How big is a black hole?
Black holes come in different sizes and their size depends on how much material (mass) they contain. Some of them are the remains of giant stars that have collapsed. To become a black hole, a star must be much more massive than our Sun.
These types of black holes are only a few kilometers across. Black holes have also been found at the centers of some galaxies. These black holes are very large and contain as much matter as 100 million or more suns. These types of black holes are several million kilometers in diameter.
Are there really black holes in space?
Because black holes don’t emit light, we can’t see them. However, we can see the effect they have on the space around them. Because black holes have extremely high gravity, they pull in surrounding material at a very high speed, causing that material to become very hot and emit X-rays.
By detecting this very hot material that spirals into black holes, astronomers can determine where some of them are. In addition, astronomers study the movement of objects in space to see where material is located that can move as if it were being impacted by a black hole.
How are black holes formed?
Scientists think that black holes are created in places where matter becomes extremely dense (where a huge amount of material is packed into an extremely small space).
This can happen at the centers of large galaxies, or when a giant star collapses and contracts in the last stages of its life. When matter becomes so dense that light cannot escape from it, the area it is in becomes a black hole.
What is a black hole?
A black hole is one of the strangest objects in space. This is a region in space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape it. Because light cannot escape from a black hole, it appears black. Light can travel faster than anything we know, at 300,000 km per second.
If light can’t escape a black hole, nothing else we know of can either. A black hole is not actually a hole, nor is it empty. It is filled with a lot of material and takes up very little space.
This is what gives the black hole super-strong gravity. The term “black hole” is used because these objects look like black holes in space – because they do not emit light.
