(ORDO NEWS) — In China, archaeologists during excavations in the central province of Henan discovered the foundations of houses that are more than 5,000 years old. These buildings are attributed by experts to the Yangshao culture, the oldest in China.
Xinhua news agency reports on the opening. It was made in the village of Yangshao, where an important archaeological site is located. Yangshao culture is considered the oldest in the history of the country. Excavations in the village have been going on for a century, but discoveries still follow one after another.
This time, archaeologists have unearthed the ruins of several houses. There is an assumption that they constituted a complex of buildings, the largest of which, as already established, had a rammed earthen floor.
The walls were also earthen, the total area of this complex exceeded 130 square meters. According to the assumptions put forward, the buildings belong to the late period of the Yangshao culture.
“For the first time since the excavations in Yangshao village in 1921, the ruins of a large house were discovered,” says Li Shiwei of the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archeology, who is leading the excavation. Yangshao culture period.
In addition, in the same area, archaeologists discovered four artificial trenches and a large number of cultural relics, including a jade ax, which probably symbolized military power.
New discoveries speak in favor of the hypothesis that during the Yangshao period, a large settlement with a large number of inhabitants could be located on this site. Probably, it could be a densely populated, at that time, prosperous city, which possessed powerful and complex defensive structures.
According to Li, all this is of great importance for studying the complexity of the civilizational process in the Yellow River basin in the prehistoric period.
The Yangshao culture, which originated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, is considered an important source of Chinese civilization. It is widely known for its advanced pottery manufacturing techniques.
