(ORDO NEWS) — A Singaporean man who installed 9 air conditioners in a rented apartment faced complaints from neighbors battling condensation and mold.
Summer in Singapore is quite hot and humid, so air conditioning is essential for comfort . Usually one or two air conditioners are enough for a standard apartment, but one local resident used as many as nine air conditioners to always be in a cool room. Complaints began pouring in from neighbors.
Temperatures in the man’s home appeared to have dropped to 18 degrees Celsius, reportedly causing condensation and black mold to form on the walls of neighboring apartments.
“We have to mop the floor three times a day. It’s a headache,” the man’s upstairs neighbor said, Shin Min Daily News reported.
The couple said they also struggled with mold on the walls due to humidity, as well as cracking of floor tiles due to temperature differences.
The main “villain” of this story , a 63-year-old pensioner named Huang, who rented a four-room apartment in Sengkang, told reporters that setting the temperature at 18 degrees Celsius helped him live comfortably in Singapore’s hot climate.
The man added that he had been diagnosed with liver cancer and the cool temperature helped boost his immunity.
“There are five air conditioners in the living room, two in the master bedroom, and one in each of the remaining two rooms,” Huang admitted, saying he paid S$10,300 just to install nine units.
The story originally made headlines in Asia last month. At that time, Juan’s neighbors began to file complaints about his air conditioners and the problems they caused.
Authorities tried to bring everyone together to reach a compromise, but that apparently didn’t work, given that Asia One recently reported that Huang had decided to move out of the apartment.
“My neighbors turned against me.
They also contacted the authorities and the press,” Huang Shin Ming told Daily News, adding that he left on September 17th.
However, he will not give up his comfort, saying that he has already taken eight air conditioners with him.
Reinstalling all the devices in the new location is likely to cost the man a tidy sum, but he said that “as long as I live comfortably, it doesn’t matter.”
Juan’s neighbors said they were relieved to hear the old man was moving out, but said they still had to spend hundreds of dollars repainting the walls and ceilings.
