(ORDO NEWS) — The number of hungry people will increase by 18 million people and reach 218 million due to hostilities in Ukraine. Maurizio Martina, Vice Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), said this in an interview with Corriere della Sera. In 2021, almost 200 million people were in a state of daily acute hunger.
Growth last year was 40 million people, famine affected 53 countries. The situation with the threat of grain supplies has become alarming for developing countries, as 36 of the 55 countries with a food crisis buy more than 10% of their wheat from Russia and Ukraine.
In addition to difficulties with transportation, there is another risk factor – a 1% rise in wheat prices could lead to hunger among 10 million people, the FAO representative explained.
