Libyan government forces claim full control of Tripoli region
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The UN-recognized Libyan Government of National Accord (NCP) has announced the complete return of control of the country’s capital. According to Aljazeera , government forces liberated Tripoli suburbs from Libyan National Army (LNA) fighters.
Previously, PNS units also occupied the Tripoli international airport, captured by the LNA last year.
In parallel, a source in the LNA told the agency Reuters that the forces of the national army under the command of Khalifa Haftar will be withdrawn from the capital to the city of Tarhun on June 4.
In 2011, after the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the country virtually ceased to function as a single state. In Libya, there are two authorities: the PNS under the leadership of Faiz Sarraj, sitting in Tripoli, and the temporary cabinet of Abdullah Abdurrahman at-Thani, which operates in the east of the country with the support of the LNA. For more than a year, the warring parties have been fighting for Tripoli.
According to Middle Eastern media, the LNA still holds the eastern and southern parts of Libya, where the country’s oil companies are located.
