Features of Pluto’s mountains

(ORDO NEWS) — Pluto is the secondplace in the solar system after the Earth , where there are high mountains with white peaks, but these “caps”, contrary to expectation, are not made of snow.

According to a study published in the journal Nature Communications, the peaks of the Plutonian mountains are covered with a thin layer of methane frost

In addition, the mountains themselves are composed mainly of water ice, and the fact of their stable existence is explained by the fact that the temperature on Pluto can drop to -233 degrees Celsius.

“The temperature on Pluto is so cold that water ice becomes as hard and strong as rock on Earth,” said Tanguy Bertrand, an astronomer at the Ames Research Center in California.

“That’s why huge mountains of water ice can exist on this dwarf planet.”
