(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers from the PRC said that there is an extremely small probability that the elongated interstellar object Oumuamua, which flew into our solar system, is an alien ship, despite the conflicting claims of a Harvard professor.
An interstellar object between 100 and 1000 meters long that visited our solar system was first detected in October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope at the University of Hawaii and caused quite a stir.
Astronomers were confused: some said it was a comet, while others claimed that it was an alien ship or the remnant of some planet.
Harvard physicist Avi Loeb pointed out in his study: “Each of the natural-origin models has serious flaws, so the possibility of artificial origin of ‘Oumuamua must be taken into account. The ‘Oumuamua anomalies suggest that it could be a [spacecraft] propelled by a solar sail.”
Chinese scientists in a new article , which was accepted for publication in the journal “Astronomy and Astrophysics”, analyzed the signs that an object equipped with a solar sail should have, and concluded “that the possibility that ‘Oumuamua is equipped with a light sail is extremely unlikely.
If it were a light sail, the change in brightness of the object would have to be much greater,” said Shangfei Liu, an astronomer at Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, China, who co-authored the study.
