(ORDO NEWS) — A resident of Portugal found a giant dinosaur skeleton in his backyard. It belongs to sauropod, its age is approximately 150 million years.
The length of the skeleton is 25, and the height is 12 meters. Now these remains are being studied by paleontologists.
A man found an unusual find during construction work on his plot of land in the city of Pombal back in 2017, but he turned to paleontologists only 5 years later. Now a group of paleontologists work in his backyard.
Spanish and Portuguese researchers identified the remains. They belonged to the largest sauropod in Europe. This four-legged dinosaur was a herbivore. They were often depicted in cartoons: the same good guys with long necks and tails.
In reality, these creatures lived on Earth 150 million years ago, in the Upper Jurassic period of the Mesozoic Era. They belong to brachiosaurids, a characteristic feature of this species is developed front limbs.
Excavations are still underway. Already elongated fragments of the axial skeleton: spine and ribs. Paleontologists noted that this skeleton has been perfectly preserved to this day, even the ribs have remained intact.
Elizabeth Malafaia, a researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, noted that the position in which the skeleton was located is also quite unusual.
Throughout history, there have been very few excavations of such positions of bones in the ground.
Elizabeth also said that at the place where the city of Pombal stands, there is an important layer with the fossilized remains of many dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic period. Research is regularly conducted in this area.
Most likely, next to these remains are the skeletons of other dinosaurs. Scientists hope to find them during further excavations and deliver them to the museum in the future.
