(ORDO NEWS) — If you have been told that you have high blood pressure, you may want to try making changes to your diet. Scientists believe that some drinks do help reduce blood pressure. Hypertension often has no obvious symptoms, and according to the UK National Health Service, many people who have high blood pressure are not even aware of it.
A study published in the National Library of Medicine found that regular consumption of unsalted tomato juice can improve blood pressure and serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in people at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. This study involved 480 residents of the Japanese city of Kuriyama. Throughout the year, they had to drink as much tomato juice as they wanted.
Physicians tested all participants for cardiovascular risk markers such as blood pressure, serum lipid profile, and glucose tolerance before and after the end of the study period.
In addition, the researchers carefully analyzed the lifestyle factors of 260 study participants.
The authors came to the following conclusion: “The beneficial effect of tomato juice does not depend on sex and age.”
“In addition, tomato juice has beneficial effects regardless of lifestyle factors.”
“Because tomato juice is readily available and ready to drink, it may be a useful dietary supplement for people at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.”
The NHS says: “Making lifestyle changes can sometimes lower your risk of developing hypertension or help lower your blood pressure if you already have it.”
One of the most effective ways to treat hypertension is diet.
The NHS experts also identified a number of lifestyle changes that can help lower blood pressure.
You need to limit the amount of salt in your diet and develop healthy eating habits, give up alcohol, lose weight if you have any, minimize caffeine, and stop smoking if you smoke.
If you are already over 40, you need to regularly undergo medical examinations.
According to the British Heart Foundation, about five million adults in the United Kingdom have hypertension without even realizing it.
Blood pressure is the force with which blood acts on the walls of blood vessels while the heart pumps it throughout the body.
Pressure is written as two numbers. The first number is systolic pressure, and this is the force with which the heart pumps blood through the vessels.
The second number is diastolic pressure, and this is the resistance that the vessels offer to the flow of blood.
The National Health Service says: “Blood pressure readings between 120/80 and 140/90 millimeters of mercury mean that you are at increased risk of developing hypertension and that you need to start monitoring your blood pressure.”
It is worth noting that if you once measured your blood pressure and it turned out to be elevated, this does not mean at all that you have hypertension, because pressure can change many times during the day.
Some people with high blood pressure may need to take certain medications to help lower it.
