EU says Brexit talks with UK deadlock
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — EU diplomatic sources believe that negotiations between the European Union and Great Britain on the preparation of an agreement on future relations after Brexit are currently at an impasse. This was reported on Tuesday by Reuters.
“We are in a deadlock <…> There are many minor technical details where we could find a solution, but on fundamental issues each side is trying to achieve its goals, and the differences are enormous. This cannot be resolved without political momentum, but it is absent.” - the agency quotes the words of one of the European diplomats.
The negotiations held last week failed to achieve significant progress on key issues; the next round of discussions is scheduled for May 11. EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier emphasized that Britain refuses any compromises on creating balanced conditions for doing business, on the free movement of people, goods and services, on the development of a veterinary and phytosanitary control regime on the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as on problems fisheries.
The UK left the EU on February 1, 2020 after three years of negotiating exit conditions. Brussels and London have agreed on a transitional period until the end of this year, during which all European standards apply to the United Kingdom. During this time, the parties must agree on a document on the procedure for building future relations.
