Drought destroys half of corn and soybean crops in Croatia

(ORDO NEWS) — A drought in the Western Balkans has wiped out half of Croatia’s future crops, with corn and soybeans particularly hard hit, growers said at a government meeting on Tuesday.

Agricultural producers of Croatia held a meeting with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and members of the Cabinet of Ministers in the government in Zagreb in the afternoon.

Farmers estimate future losses at 1 billion kunas (about 133 million euros), the government previously announced financial assistance in the amount of 200 million kunas (about 26.6 million euros).

“We requested an early payment of financial assistance, at least 80% in October, so that agricultural producers could use these funds.

We demand that various administrative restrictions for agricultural producers be reduced, and we also list problems with the supply and use of diesel fuel, which causes great damage to us,” - Mato Brlosic, head of the Croatian Chamber of Agriculture, told reporters.

According to farmers, future crops of corn and soybeans were most affected, as “there was no precipitation for two and a half months.”

“More than 50% of crops are under threat and we demand the declaration of a natural disaster,” national television quoted the farmers as saying.
