(ORDO NEWS) — The theory of relativity with regards to time is very specific. She says that clocks closer to the center of a large gravitational mass (such as the Earth) run slower than clocks farther away.
They simply do not start the next day until they click through those 38 microseconds that they are behind during the current day. But there are other interesting theories. Although they are a little further than science, they are also worth knowing about.
Can molehills take us back in time
NASA agrees that general relativity provides theoretical scenarios for traveling into the past. But this is not a piece of cake that you can just take off the table. Such a piece is rather wormholes (or molehills).
- These are theoretical tunnels through the fabric of space-time that can connect one moment or place in reality to another.
- They are also called “Einstein-Rosen bridges”, “wormholes of space” (wormholes) or “white holes”.
In general, the topic of molehills is rather speculative. Science fiction has taken this idea and exploits it to the fullest. But – in real life, no one has ever discovered any wormholes of any kind.
So far, everything in this area is purely hypothetical.
- Some hypotheses say that these molehills at the entrance are extremely narrow (10 to -33 degrees of a centimeter), and therefore hardly noticeable.
- Others say that the tunnels are unstable and unlikely to allow travel in them.
- Still others – that, on the contrary, wormholes are very viable, and in general are labels for space-time.
An example is an article by the physicist Pascal Coiran (very fresh, October 2021), who, thanks to the new Eddington-Finkelstein metric, traced the movement of a particle through a hypothetical wormhole.
We will not delve into the explanation – just because of the hypothetical nature, but if this topic is interesting, Koiran’s article is still worth attention.
Other Interesting Alternative Time Travel Theories
Other solutions that may allow jumping forward and backward in time are even further from science. Yes, and they have a very significant drawback: a person will not be able to survive under the influence of gravitational attraction and repulsion, which each alternative solution requires. But why not find out about them?
Infinite Cylinder Theory
Astronomer Frank Tipler proposed this mechanism (“Tipler cylinder”):
- Take a substance 10 times the mass of the Sun, roll it up into a very long and very dense spaghetti-like cylinder, and spin a spaceship around it in a precise spiral at a speed of several billion revolutions per minute.
- So, they say, the ship will be able to travel back in time.
Obviously, this theory cannot be tested in practice. Yes, even the theory says that this cylinder must either be infinitely long, or made of some matter unknown to people.
So in the foreseeable future, we will not see endless interstellar pasta.
Vacuum donut theory
Theoretical physicist Amos Ory from Israel proposed a model of a time machine created from a curved space-time – a donut-shaped vacuum surrounded by a sphere of normal matter. Here is how the author explained his theory:
If we created a space with a similar curvature that would allow the timelines to close, this could in turn allow future generations to go back in time to visit us.
Of course, there are a few reservations about Ori’s time machine.
- First, no one will be able to travel back in time to the times that were before the invention and design of the donut time.
- Secondly, the invention and design of this machine will depend on the ability to manipulate gravitational fields. And this is really a feat that is still unattainable and can only be theoretically admissible.
