(ORDO NEWS) — We have worked out this action to automatism: take a saucepan with boiling eggs, bring it to the sink, drain the hot water and start the cold one. Next time, take a break and think, maybe our advice will come in handy for you.
The eggshell not only protects the embryo until the moment when it is ready to be “born”, but also supplies it with all the substances necessary for nutrition and development.
The shell contains many useful minerals (phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, nitrogen, iron, magnesium and others), but the main one is calcium carbonate, which makes up 90% of the total composition of the product.
Calcium helps maintain a neutral soil pH of 6.0-6.5.
During the boiling of eggs, some of the nutrients are boiled out of the shell and remain in the water. Calcium-enriched liquid is a super fertilizer for plants, both country and home.
Of course, it cannot become a full-fledged source of vitamins and minerals, but as an additional top dressing during the period of active growth – and even more so flowering – it fits perfectly.
How to understand that the plant lacks calcium
With a lack of calcium in the soil, the plant will produce weak and thin shoots with a pale, poorly defined color. Leaves may turn yellow at the edges, curl and lose their shape. The root system develops poorly and does not provide the plant with proper nutrition, from which it may die.
What is the danger of an excess of calcium
Although calcium supplementation is certainly beneficial for plants, it is still not worth it to be zealous. An excess of this substance can interfere with the absorption of other important micronutrients. Malnutrition can lead to spots on the leaves, falling buds, deformation of the shoots.
You can fertilize houseplants with water in which eggs were boiled once every 3-4 weeks – and this is provided that you do not feed with other combined preparations. In this case, there is a risk of an overdose of mineral salts.
What plants can and cannot be fertilized with calcium
Pour “egg” water on the shoots of tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant, pumpkin and other gourds, and they will respond to care with lush growth and a good harvest. Calcium fertilizers are also loved by apple trees, cherries, currants and raspberries.
In contrast, crops such as cucumbers, strawberries, beans, cabbage, and spinach do not tolerate calcium-rich soil well. An excess of mineral salts leads to the occurrence of diseases and even death of plants.
It is also impossible to water “egg” water with some indoor plants – namely, camellia, azalea, hydrangea, violet and pelargonium.
