(ORDO NEWS) — According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, the speed of light is a fundamental characteristic of our universe, representing the maximum speed at which information can travel through space.
Thus, nothing can accelerate to 300,000 kilometers per second, the speed at which light travels in a vacuum. Sound, which, being waves of compression-expansion in matter, is not even able to exist in a vacuum.
However, light can be seriously slowed down by passing it through transparent materials (air, water, glass, etc.).
For example, a beam of light passing through ordinary household glass loses about 33% of its speed. But even with this significant slowdown, light still travels about 50,000 times faster than sound waves.
Some theoretical physicists believe that for a relatively short period of time, shortly after the Big Bang, the speed of light could have been much faster.
If this is true, then we could solve a number of “technical problems” associated with the early universe. However, there is no convincing evidence for this.
