US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Specialists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology have stated that chimpanzees have a habit of throwing stones at trees, and they do this for a reason.
Scientists were able to establish that animals throw stones to create an acoustic effect.
Several years ago, researchers who observed the behavior of several chimpanzees in West Africa noticed a strange peculiarity – animals periodically threw stones at trees and shouted loudly. At first, experts suggested that for some reason, monkeys simply love these trees, because they found piles of stones at the base.
In addition, the researchers thought that chimpanzees had such a tradition for a long time. However, later experts installed microphones near these trees to pick up the sounds of stones.
In all, the researchers tested 13 different tree species in different scenarios, noting how muffled or bright the sounds were and how long the sound lasted. According to scientists, chimpanzees most often choose trees with an open root system, because in this case the sound will be louder and longer. However, experts still cannot determine why monkeys are attracted to such strange sounds.
