(ORDO NEWS) — The World Health Organization (WHO) said that new strains of coronavirus are expected to appear that will be even more contagious than the current ones.
This statement was made by WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove.
On Tuesday, May 31, she spoke at a Q&A session broadcast on the organization’s Twitter page.
“We expect that more variants [of the coronavirus] will be identified and they are likely to be more contagious,” the specialist said.
She also clarified that it is not yet clear whether the new strains will cause a more severe course of the disease. That is why Kerkhove urged residents to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“Even if you have been infected in the past, it is important to get vaccinated when the opportunity presents itself,” the expert said.
She concluded by adding that the coronavirus “still has a devastating impact on society” and the global health emergency associated with the pandemic is still ongoing.
